We acknowledge God in Christ Jesus as the Creator and Sustainer of all things. This revelation leads us to worship Him and marvel at the beauty inherent in His creation.
In His infinite wisdom, God, through Christ, created and brought order to aspects of His universe using mathematics. Just as an artist skilfully crafts a masterpiece, He employed intricate mathematical patterns to shape the cosmos. When we contemplate the mathematical laws governing the natural world, we catch glimpses of His handiwork and stand in awe.
As we discover these patterns and laws, we can usually rely on them and hold them to be true. Guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we can use them to cultivate culture, plan, predict, build, and create other mathematical ideas. For God uses us, for His purposes, to redeem His world and bring about His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
However, we will not put our faith in these mathematical laws and patterns, nor in our own ability to reason, explain, and create these ideas. They are not divine, and we are not divine. We put our faith in the Creator, who is divine. God is neither subject to nor limited by the laws that govern aspects of the creation that He made. At times, He chooses to work in miraculous ways beyond the bounds of mathematical modelling.
A well-articulated philosophy of mathematics, such as the one above, informs teacher choices and provides meaningful contexts for learning.
