My story: Wealth – being wise with God’s abundance

There are so many times we have seen God provide for not only our needs, but often our desires as well. Sometimes this happens when we least expect it. On one occasion, a ‘bank error in your favour collect…’ (just like Monopoly) happened! We had kept communication with the bank that, years later, proved their error and resulted in the bank paying out significant compensation. Having knowledge, understanding, and wisdom (our desire for our students) undoubtably helped us in this process.

Many times, God has used the generosity of others to provide for our needs, such as helping us set up our home in a new city, sourcing fridges, washing machines, etc., and lending us furniture and cars when needed.

A few years ago, I was doing this unit of work on finance with my Year 10 students when my son, who had recently graduated from university, was offered a job in another city. We had no idea how to even begin to help him get set up with housing, cars, furnishing, etc. I shared these ‘real-time’ concerns with my students, not knowing the end of the story. However, we knew God had provided this opportunity. We arrived on a ‘red eye’ flight early Saturday morning and began trekking around to the available rental apartments in the area. Every rental had long queues waiting to look at them, but amazingly, there was just one that was perfect for him. It was a converted garage behind the main house, not attractive to many, but perfect for my son. Complete with furnishing and a family who looked out for him!

Financial knowledge allows us to be shrewd with our finances, and in turn, this provides us with even more opportunities to give generously to those in need. It’s amazing how, even when we surprise others with large ‘unexpected’ gifts, we are the ones who somehow end up receiving so much joy! Perhaps that is the way God designed it.

What are some of the ways you have personally experienced God’s generosity, care, and provision? Share these with your students.
